CHARACTER NAME: Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Ross
FANDOM: Marvel Ultimates
CHRONOLOGY: Pulling her from page 10 of Ultimate Wolverine vs Hulk. (Panel 3 if we’re being nitpicky.) She's had SheHulk powers for about a week and was on her way to meet up with Bruce in Casablanca - huzzah! - but she then she pretty much had a head on collision with Murphy's Law. Now Betty is big, green, naked, and has been stabbed in the spleen and kidney. Fun times! Thanks Wolverine!
BACKGROUND:
Betty is the daughter of legendary general, in a world where even legendary generals are overshadowed by legendary super heroes. An army brat who spent her childhood all over the US Betty grew up with discipline and focus deeply instilled by her father General Thaddeus 'Thunderbolt' Ross. She went from Connecticut to NYU where she roomed with her future co-worker Janet Van Dyne for a time, before switching programs to get her Communications degree at Berkeley.
Around this time she began dating Bruce Banner, the head scientist of the Super-Soldier Program. Though they were happy for a time when Bruce's experiments backfired and turned him into the Hulk their relationship soured on a thousand levels. Though they stayed together for years and were at one time engaged, after Bruce went on a particularly damaging rampage that ended with General Ross capturing him Betty angrily pulled away from him, claiming he was a toxic influence on her life. She instigated a six month 'temporary' relationship break and moved to SoHo for a time to sort out her own life.
When the Ultimates were assembled a short time later she was offered a position as their their Director of Communications and Public Relations. Forced into a working relationship with Bruce again as he was the secondary on the new Super Soldier project also under the Ultimates' umbrella of projects she snubbed her former lover harshly at every turn, determined to keep him at arms length. Spurned and jealous of Betty's attention being directed elsewhere, as well as piled with stress and anger at his job situation, Bruce snapped under the strain. He took some of Captain America's recently rediscovered blood, combined it with the Hulk formula that he had previously managed to strain out of his system, and injected it into himself, resulting in his transformation into the grey-skinned Hulk. He called Betty while she was in the middle of a business dinner with Freddie Prinze Jr warning he he'd 'done something stupid again'. Then he chased her down at the restaurant, smashing in windows and shouting her name, rampaging across manhattan to try to reach her, pleading that she was the only person that he had...
Bruce was eventually brought down by the Ultimates, but not before killing more than 800 civilians. Betty watched him later in the holding chamber, cut to the quick by such a display of devotion from him, despite the grand and disastrous scale of it. ("I'm just staggered to think that someone could want me so much that he'd do this to himself.")
In the wake of everything she began speaking to Bruce on friendly terms again, feeling guilty for treating him so poorly before and attempting, however awkwardly, to rekindle their relationship, both beginning to acknowledge her continuing love for him as well as a sort of perverse attraction to his savage Hulk side which was now a permanent part of him.
Although Betty initially used her PR skills to cover up any connection between Bruce Banner and the Hulk in the public eye, the news was leaked eventually, which meant a human face on the rampage that had killed so many innocent New York citizens. Betty was devastated knowing that no jury would ever acquit Bruce for his crime. A certain death sentence loomed over him, and although Betty put on her professional fave and coldly went along with the U.S. government's intentions to execute him, she broke down during the trial. She visited him shortly before the verdict, pleading with him that she loved him and asking to be let into his cell so she could touch him again. She pleaded with Bruce that she loved him and she was sorry, asked for him to tell her he loved her to, that he forgave her. Bruce did neither, pointing out all the cameras trained on him for the trial ("I'm too embarrassed, in front of all these people.")
When S.H.I.E.L.D. discovered months later that Bruce Banner was still alive, Nick Fury contacted Wolverine and contracted him to find and kill the Hulk. Betty was furious that no one had told her that Bruce was discovered alive, insistent that he should get amnesty or SOMETHING.
Frustrated by all attempts to lock her out of the situation she lied to Nick Fury and framed Jennifer Walters as trying to sell the new and improved super soldier serum to the Chinese, then took the sample for herself and used it... on herself. Transformed into the SheHulk Betty crash landed in Tibet to break up the fight between Wolverine and Bruce, only to have Nick Fury try to bomb all of them out of existence.
In the aftermath she and Bruce thought they had made a clear get away, traveling separately to meet in Casablanca, talk things through, start over. Then Wolverine showed up, stabbed her in her kidney and spleen and told her to stay out of things, and not to warn Bruce he was coming for him. Betty pleaded with him not to kill Bruce - 'I love him' - and Wolverine's reply was. 'Too bad.'
And now? Now she's in the city. It's been a bad day...
PERSONALITY:
Betty Ross is a woman after her own ends. She stays out of other people's business when she feels something isn't hers to worry about and she keeps her fingers firmly on the pulse of everything else. Her communications career has a fine moral edge that she walks expertly. If you're going to do PR for S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Ultimates you need to be a master of your craft and that Betty is without a doubt. Nick Fury has commented that she just 'has no off switch', the bottom line of her work always on her mind. She's at least as bad a workaholic as her on-again off-again lover and one-time fiancee Bruce Banner which is saying something given his obsessive dedication to his work.
This sort of career has cultivated a sort of ruthlessness in Betty, leaving her with a knack for deceit and manipulation that's carried over into her everyday life. She lies easily and takes an aggressive stance with what she wants out of life, but she also has it in her to be incredibly controlled and diplomatic when the situation calls for it - putting on a brave mask and following orders (to a point) when the man she had realized she still loved was about to the executed.
Although she loves and has always loved Bruce Banner it took knowing that he was going to be killed to make Betty throw off caution and admit how much she cared for him openly. Although she has previously treated him - by her own admission - 'like dirt' she is drawn and held by his powerful devotion to her. His dedication and ability to love her totally despite her sometimes cruel nature was what first appealed her in him, but finally after mourning him and then finding out that he wasn't dead after all she decided it was time to be the one that met his demands instead.
Stealing the altered super soldier serum that Jennifer Walters had worked on and transforming herself into the SheHulk was her final testament to the change in her feelings for him - making herself into, in essential, his perfect mate. She's looking forward to the rest of her life making things right with him.
CLASS: Unaligned although she'll lean toward hero if forced. It's just that she’s used to being hero support staff, not doing the dirty work herself.
SUPERHERO NAME: SheHulk
ALTER EGO: Betty Ross: PR and Communications Director Extraordinaire!
POWER: > Betty is her universe’s version of SheHulk, which means an astronomical degree of strength, stamina and aggression bundled into a big - that's eighteen feet tall sort of big - green package. In a calm state she can lift a solid 90 tons but piss her off and the damage she could do is potentially incalculable. Although her transformations from a human to a Hulk state are mostly controlled and she has a solid handle on the aggression that normally comes with such a form, she can be pushed to a limit. She’s also HELLA new to the powers. I mean ‘have-had-them-for-maybe-two-weeks, can-still-count-the-number-of-times-she’s-used-them-on-one-hand’ kind of new.
COMMUNITY POST SAMPLE:
Oh god... this is... nn, this is Betty Ross. I don't know where the hell I am right now but I need to find someone.
I have to find Bruce Banner. If he's even here, I don't know, but I need someone to warn him. Wolverine is coming to kill him and I can't protect him right now. I... I'm hurt. I've lost a lot of blood.
Please someone help me...
THIRD PERSON:|
(This is an opening post for a thread at an AU game where I play Betty - if this is suitable as a sample, yay! If not please just let me know and I would be happy to revise with something totally different.)
Betty woke up feeling just a little cold.
It was more from the faint breeze than the ambient temperature but it wouldn't have been enough to bother her if she had been, well, wearing anything. As it was she was sprawled naked in some rather nice grass, pillowed against Bruce's side. He was stroking his fingers through her hair, slow and a little clumsy, the sort of lazy way he touched her when he was groggy and mostly still asleep.
She blinked blearily around for a few moments, taking in the valley they'd settled in in the faintly gold haze of the sun starting to go down. There was a clear swath of damage trailing from where they were now lying off into the distance, the route by which they had come in and a reasonably wide berth of smashed grass which they were still lying in the middle of. Their expanded clothes were discarded about 40 feet off. Well, at least hers were. Bruce's pants were partly underneath them like an awkward picnic blanket.
Betty couldn't remember how long they'd been here, or - for that matter - how far they'd managed to get from New York state before the all-clear had been called and the mad rampage across the continent fighting aliens had been abandoned in favor of finding an unpopulated area to rip each others clothes off in. But wherever they now were it was twilight and she'd been curled up in the grass sleeping off a hulk-amplified post-coital endorphin rush for what was likely hours. She had the sneaking suspicion that she and Bruce would both be a bit sore from sunburns come morning.
At the moment though she wasn't inclined to worry about it, her brain still fogged with sleep and every bit of her pleasantly aching. She turned her head up toward Bruce, smothering a yawn.
"Hey... any idea what day it is?"
